For the past twenty years of my artistic career I’ve focused on the human figure; mostly nudes and figures from life models. By using mixed media (acrylics, pastels and charcoal) I could quickly capture their spirit on paper. Recently, I’ve begun to focus on still lifesand life about town – using images taken from my sketch books.
I had always thought of still lifes as more “dead than alive.” However, I’ve discovered that I can achieve my main artistic goal—capturing the spirit of the object (rather than achieving photo realism) through still lifes just as readily as through the human form; some of my still lifes are more traditional in spirit while others are more whimsical.
The series on musicians came almost by happenstance. While living in Hong Kong, I was constantly with a sketchbook in hand. It was a way of utilizing my time on the subway while heading downtown. One evening our destination was the Jazz Club and I decided to try drawing the musicians. I was pleased with the results, finding that I enjoyed capturing their exuberant spirit. Since that time I have had a few local musicians model for me and recently went back to drawing and painting at live performances.
Being creative means always evolving. I have recently taken up oil painting. I am now using my drawings from my travels both away and around town in my paintings, transferring the images from sketchbook to canvas.
